Puuuurfect Pet Pics!

A little while back there was a thread going around social media posing the question “If someone from the 1950’s were to suddenly appear today, what would be the most difficult thing to explain to them about life today?” The answer that went viral was: “I possess a device, in my pocket, that is capable of accessing the entirety of information known to man. I use it to look at pictures of cats and get in arguments with strangers.”

Why is is that we flood social media with pet photography? Whether you are a cat person or dog person or both – or prefer another type of pet altogether – the photographs just keep on coming! There are even specific websites and apps such as Catastic and Dogboogie that exist purely to help you improve your pet photography, particularly when on the move. You can use them to add special effects to your photographs then share them on social media.

Our obsession with sharing pet photography is indicative of how significant our pets are in our lives, to the extent that they become part of our identity. Anyone with a dog will know that you will often see the same people when out dog walking, and will exchange not just pleasantries but everyday details about your dog, your home, your family and your life: and yet you will probably never know their name! They are just “Belle’s mum” or “Harvey’s dad”. Similarly on social media we can chat passionately about our cat with a total stranger and feel we really know them, even though we don’t at all. Pets can unite us and bring strangers together.

All this is very well but, given that our pets are so special and significant to so many of us, it’s a shame if our pet photography is only confined to social media. You may constantly take photographs of your pet and share them but do you have any photographs that you can keep? In our increasingly digital culture we can fall into the trap of sharing so much that we keep nothing for ourselves.

Sadly pets are with us for only a relatively short time. So there is never a time like the present for some really good pet photography to give you some future memories to treasure. Whether this is in the form of a printed photograph album, wall art or a digital display album is up to you. But why not get some pet photography done while you pet is in his or her prime.
